Analysis of 3 magazines

T.I The main image on the front cover has a facial expression that shows he’s serious, slightly angered. He is very famous for his music, which is aimed more at urbanized areas, he raps, falling under the category of grime, gang hood lifestyle, so audiences from these sorts of backgrounds will relate to his music, he is also wearing informal clothes which are considered to being cool, a snapback placed at an angle and silver chains
The Masthead of this magazine is Vibe which is very urban, trendy to young people, its only four letters easy to say, it’s fresh and audiences that read this magazine would feel as there are trendy, sharp and hip. The people who read this magazine often will identify it really quickly as it’s already very popular in the market, therefore the designers of this magazine dont even need to show the whole masthead for their audiences to identify it.
Vibe has chosen to have a background colour of midnight blue as it brings warmth to magazine, also allowing it to express and expose the details on the magazine itself, in this case the mast head, the sell lines, also trying to blend TI’s clothing in which is mainly black, this was done in order to project TI’s  face. The mast head is red, the obvious denotations for this would be that it stands out from the darker background, however also we see that red is a vibrant colour, related to love and things that you may urge and desire, so having that feeling of crave, makes audiences more attached as its more visible and projected to them.
Whilst analysing the layout we see that the majority of the magazine is covered by TI, as this was the main focus of selling in the production of this magazine, this was done as Famous TI has large audiences who look up to him and idolize him, thus they would want to buy it and keep up with what’s out there. We find that the left third consists of the letter ‘V’ from the masthead, making it easy for audiences to identify the magazine they read. In addition we find that it says ‘T.I exclusive’ which stands out to audiences who have interest towards him, they would expect to find more than the usual about him. Moreover we find that TI has been compared to Tupac where it says ‘people have been comparing me to Tupac’ this gets people suspicious and curious as to why people are comparing him to Tupac, who was one of the best in rapping history. This opens a conversation for the people, so therefore intriguing them in the story so they’d want to buy it and read it, because of that one interesting story. Likewise it states that ‘Keri Hilson has been a very bad girl’ therefore people who have interest towards this celebrity would also want to find out what she’s been doing to have such a status.

The masthead is much enlarged, taking up the majority of the top half of this magazine, it is the second biggest entity after the main image, allowing the title to stand out and noticed so that it can reach out to its audiences. The colour is a fine light blue which evokes the ideas of peace and tranquillity, as this colour is mostly associated with confidence, loyalty, trust and faith. This brings warmth to the magazine. Giving the feeling of elegance and sophistication, also reinforcing with the main image on the front of this magazine. The masthead is also uplifted in this magazine due that it is contrasting with its background. Vibe tend to have their font and sizing of the masthead continuously the same, other than their odd special edition. So that regular customers can easily identify the masthead and buy the magazine.

Kanye west has been chosen as the main image of this magazine, as he is extremely popular for his rap music, giving the magazine a huge enhancement as it’s reaching out to millions and millions of audiences who have interest towards Kanye west, because of his popularity in his music or for his brilliant individuality and personality. Kanye looks very appealing in this magazine as they’ve used a contrasting background to make his face look very uplifting, they’ve also used a shadow affect which is outlined around him making him look three dimensional giving the illusive feeling that he’s there with the audience themselves. His facial expressions gestures that he’s very serious about his music, keen and dedicated towards his new album, also he takes up the majority of the magazine, which shows dominancy and makes him look very controlling. Which relates with his music where he likes to be in power and control. Too, vibe has chosen to do a close up shot of his face whilst also using direct mode of address which allows them to feel connected with the artist and very welcome into reading further, his eyes have been enhanced by lighting, making it appear to look sparkly, similar to ‘puss in boots’ when he puts his adorable face on making his eyes stand out to show his innocence and making you want to adore him, vibe has chosen to apply that effect on Kanye west’s audiences so that they can admire him more. The rapper looks very calm and relaxed which gives him the sense of elegance and sophistication, relating to the masthead colours and fitting in perfectly with the house style, though he also looks very classy in this magazine, shown from his presentation as he has very neat shaped up facial hair. It looks more formal than the typical vibe magazine, which may have been done to target at audiences of higher class.  I believe that the age range for this magazine is sixteen to twenty one, because rap culture is mainly fantasised by young teenage boys and girls.

Mise en scene:
In the main image located in the centre we identify that this gentlemen is dressed very smartly, wearing a waist coat and a tie. It is a perfect representation of a man with a high posture and level of maturity. This would appeal to the audience as most men like to approach the ‘business world’ which is classy and formal. Men will identify this product as a Men's magazine as the character looks like an ideal man who is proud of what he does. This will then engage them into wanting to find out what he does and why he is so successful.
There is no particular setting or theme for this magazine as the photo has been taken with a white background, White is a very neutral colour, also having a sense of richness and purity as all the pictures and text stand out from it.  I believe that this has been done to show multi-purposes of this magazine so that it don’t have one story. This would appeal to the audience as they would want to explore a variety of things in a magazine.
His facial expression looks as if he’s casual and tranquil about everything. This can be seen by his light smile and his eyebrows. The fact that the tip of his brows are facing down shows something like “yeah I'm rich and cool". The audience know that this man has just achieved something and has a higher status, because often people make that face when they’re conveying that they’re the one. Which the producers may have purposely done to keep suspense, so people have that urge into buying it, to find out why he’s pulled of that exact face.
His body language is very upright and fixed which shows he has a high status. As people with low statuses would have bad body language, which could be down and sloppy. This shows the reader there is masculinity in this magazine so male readers would be interested, as they like dominant and strong characters, so that they can then follow them and consume their credibility.
Masthead:
This is an appealing mast head; as it has a bright red ‘G’. The producers are confident enough to actually let their target audience identify it from one of the letters, they know that shops only view the left third of the magazines layout, the magazine has been out long enough for it to enhance its popularity. They have been clever in grey scaling the other letter which is a ‘Q’, as they wanted to the central image to show higher importance than the title itself, really conveying the man’s authority and dominance.
The main image:
We see that the main image of this magazine is Joseph Gordon-Levitt who is a famous American actor, director, screenwriter, producer and editor. He is a very remarkable man, therefore the producers have really shown in through the use of his image size in the magazine being immense, the producers really promoting him out to the world, he can be seen from a far distance in the shops and draw people attention, if a magazine looks nice, or is promoted with a celebrity that someone likes, then most likely it is bought. The producers have used celebrity endorsement to seek attention of current fans who aspire to him, or of those who genuinely like his characteristics, this allows promotion for the magazine, as the celebrity can tweet what edition of the magazine he or she is in and promote the magazine to his fans, therefore allowing the magazine to sell more, The magazine may be bought if people idolise to him specifically, to get fashion advise, they believe that if they follow him they may actually achieve in life. They also might be interested in his hair as he keeps it up like his status, showing his power and style, although he is in a position of power, he’d like to attract his fans by his looks, which may appeal to them, so they’d buy it. This is a person who is getting the money for the magazine he is the model credit, but also mass promoting it at the same time.
Analysis of layout:
The layout of this magazine is very neat as the makers have concentrated on the main image. We also see that there are sell lines and sub stories surrounding the main image. Keeping this magazine clean and simple shows a sense of richness, mainly because it’s not too messy or over done by colour. Keeping it simple allows the target audience to identify the magazine and pick it up, also it isn’t too complex, ultimately making the magazine easier to read.
Target audience:
The target audience for this magazine is men; the age range would be 22-30. As it has stuff inside which will interest men, for example “The tastiest and least crowded hot spots”. The audience will be interested in this as they’d want to know the ideal place to take their woman to. Moreover we understand that the age range is not the young typical teenagers, but targeted at the older adults, the makers knowing that they can push the prices up as it’s more affordable for the working people. Targets audiences would also differ as celebrity endorsement brings buyers.
Sell line
In this magazine the sell line is ‘style forecast’ located in the top right. The audience will instantly identify that it has fashion trends, therefore any stylists or particular people interested in fashion would see this and therefore buy it. The sell line itself demonstrates that there’d be tips on how to dress up and keep you up with the latest fashion trends, the audience would be interested by the fashion content inside so they’d be interested in buying the magazine.
Left third:
Consists of the title of the magazine, name of the celebrity actually featured, and catchy sub headings. This is the most important side of the magazine as this is the side that is viewed in the shops. The creators of this particular magazine have created it so that the audience can identify it by its name. More too, engage audiences to the interesting sub headings, in this case we see that they mention about desserts “lick it up”, anyone interested in their desserts would find it appealing, and therefore buy it.
Photoshop: has been used in order to make the celebrity look more appealing as wrinkles and bags underneath the eyes have been faded. This was done to make him look more appealing to audiences. They have also made parts of his hair look highlighted in order to show he has style and looks classy, making him a figure of role model by doing this.
